How to Cancel Private Health Insurance in the UK
Published: 19 October 2026
Before cancelling a policy, check the contract, your renewal date and whether you have treatment or claims in progress. A gap in cover can affect eligibility and underwriting if you later apply elsewhere.
The cooling-off period
FCA rules generally give consumers 14 days to cancel most insurance contracts without penalty and without giving a reason. The period normally starts when the contract is concluded, or when you receive the required terms and information if later. Exceptions and the treatment of premiums for cover already provided can apply, so check the insurer's cancellation notice and policy.
After the cooling-off period
Refunds, notice requirements and any administration charges depend on the contract and circumstances. Contact the insurer directly and ask for written confirmation of the final cover date, any refund or amount due, and what happens to open claims.
If you plan to switch, arrange the replacement policy first and compare underwriting, exclusions and continuity options. Do not assume your previous terms carry over automatically.
