Is Private Health Insurance Worth It in the UK?

Published: 19 October 2026

Whether private health insurance is worth the cost depends on what you want it to do and whether the policy covers the treatment you may need. It is not a replacement for the NHS: private medical insurance is usually designed around eligible acute treatment, while exclusions and limits apply.

Reasons people consider cover

A policy may help pay for approved consultations, tests or treatment in private facilities and can offer choice over some providers. The exact benefits depend on the level of cover, hospital list, excess and underwriting. Check whether outpatient diagnosis is included or capped.

What it may not do

Policies commonly exclude or limit pre-existing and chronic conditions, routine screening and emergency treatment. Premiums continue whether or not you claim, and renewal costs can change. A policy does not guarantee a particular treatment, provider or appointment time.

Compare with alternatives

Consider whether you could pay for a specific treatment yourself, use NHS care, or combine NHS and private care. Compare the premium over time with the benefits you actually value, and include the excess and any shortfall risk. Do not buy cover assuming a current condition will be covered.

Our private health insurance and NHS guide explains how the two routes can work alongside each other.
