Northern Ireland Private Healthcare Update: Q1 2026
Published: 4 November 2026
PHIN recorded 5,720 private hospital admissions in Northern Ireland during Q1 2026, an 8% decrease compared with Q1 2025. The organisation reported that insurance-funded admissions fell by 16.4%, while self-pay admissions rose by 4.2%.
PHIN’s report also counted 2,600 self-pay admissions for the quarter. These are admissions, not individual patients, health insurance policies or claims. The figures describe private hospital activity and do not by themselves show whether a particular policy is affordable or appropriate.
What to check if you live in Northern Ireland
If you are considering private cover, check that the policy’s hospital and consultant networks include providers you could realistically use. Confirm how referrals work, whether the insurer needs to approve tests and treatment in advance, and what exclusions, excesses and limits apply.
The existence of private hospital activity in the region does not guarantee that every specialty is available locally or covered under your plan. Ask the insurer about the exact hospital and consultant before arranging care.
