Does Private Health Insurance Cover Cataract Surgery?
Published: 30 October 2026
Cataract surgery is a common planned procedure in the UK, and people may use the NHS, private medical insurance or self-pay. Whether your policy covers it depends on your diagnosis, product and insurer approval.
Confirm the treatment pathway
Ask whether your cover includes private diagnosis or only treatment after an NHS or privately funded diagnosis. Check the approved consultant and hospital, excess, benefit limit and whether the policy covers the type of lens and procedure recommended. Do not assume an upgrade or optional service is included.
If you are paying yourself, ask for a written quote and check whether it includes assessment, tests, surgery, lens choice, follow-up and treatment of complications. Ask what happens if one eye or both eyes need treatment.
For clinical information about the procedure, discuss options and timing with an eye-care professional; insurance cover does not determine clinical suitability.
