Private Health Insurance for International Students in the UK
Published: 19 October 2026
International students should check their healthcare entitlement before travelling. Private health insurance and access to NHS services are not interchangeable, and immigration status, course length and the UK nation where you study can affect the rules.
Check your NHS and visa position first
Many students applying for a visa for a course lasting more than six months must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of the visa process. The surcharge provides access to NHS care on the applicable basis; buying private insurance does not replace a required surcharge. Short courses, visitors and specific immigration categories may be treated differently.
Use current government and university guidance for your own visa and location. UKCISA explains that healthcare arrangements vary across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
When optional private cover may be useful
You might consider a policy for eligible private treatment or services beyond your NHS entitlement. Check residency and GP registration requirements, exclusions for pre-existing conditions, waiting periods, hospital access and whether the policy covers treatment in the UK only.
If you already have insurance at home, ask the insurer whether it extends to the UK and for how long. Do not assume a travel policy covers ongoing care.
