Does Private Health Insurance Cover Hernia Surgery?

Published: 30 October 2026

Hernia surgery may be considered planned treatment, but a private medical insurer will assess the condition against your policy. Cover may be affected by symptoms or investigations before joining, exclusions, benefit limits and whether the operation is medically necessary.

Check before arranging an appointment

Ask if your policy includes private diagnosis, or whether you need an NHS diagnosis first. Confirm the referral route, recognised surgeon and hospital, authorisation requirements, excess and any limit on consultant fees. Ask what the approval includes, such as tests, anaesthesia, hospital stay and follow-up.

If the insurer declines cover, request the reason and relevant policy clause in writing. For self-pay, request an itemised quotation and check whether it includes complications or extra hospital nights.

For urgent symptoms, seek NHS medical advice rather than waiting for a planned private claim.
