Does Private Health Insurance Cover Hip Replacement?

Published: 30 October 2026

Hip replacement is a planned procedure that may be funded through private medical insurance, self-pay or the NHS. Insurance cover is not automatic: the policy must cover the condition and treatment, and the insurer must approve the claim.

Check your eligibility before booking

Ask whether the policy covers the diagnosis and proposed operation, whether it requires an NHS or private consultant referral, and whether your medical history affects cover. Confirm the hospital and surgeon are recognised, and check the excess, consultant-fee limits and any waiting-time option.

If you are self-funding, request a written estimate that states whether it includes the consultation, tests, surgeon, anaesthetist, hospital stay, implant, medicines and aftercare. Package prices can have exclusions.

Discuss clinical suitability and recovery with your healthcare professional. Insurance decisions do not replace medical advice.

Treatment eligibility depends on the policy, underwriting and insurer authorisation. This is not medical advice.
