Does Private Health Insurance Cover Home Nursing?
Published: 30 October 2026
Home nursing is not automatically included in private medical insurance. Some policies may provide a limited benefit when nursing is medically necessary and follows eligible inpatient or day-patient treatment; others restrict or exclude it.
Check the conditions and allowance
Ask whether a doctor must recommend the care, how soon after hospital treatment it must happen, which nurses or providers are recognised, and how many visits or what maximum amount is covered. Confirm whether the insurer needs authorisation before discharge.
Do not confuse post-operative nursing with general home care, long-term support or help with daily living. These services may be treated differently from short-term medical care under the policy.
If you are planning a hospital stay, ask the consultant, hospital and insurer to agree the discharge plan and who will pay for each service. Get the benefit decision in writing.
