Does Private Health Insurance Cover Knee Replacement?

Published: 30 October 2026

Knee replacement is a planned operation that may be available through the NHS, private insurance or self-pay. A private medical policy may cover eligible treatment, but it will not necessarily cover a condition or symptoms that existed before the policy began.

Get the insurer's decision first

Ask whether your diagnosis and the recommended operation meet the policy terms. Confirm the referral route, recognised consultant and hospital, authorisation number, excess, any outpatient or surgical benefit limit, and whether post-operative physiotherapy is included.

If the insurer does not cover the claim, ask for the policy clause and check the formal complaint process. If paying privately, request a written quote and confirm whether consultation, scans, surgeon, anaesthetist, hospital stay, implant and aftercare are included.
