No-Claims Discounts on Private Health Insurance: What to Check

Published: 18 October 2026

A no-claims discount (NCD) is a policy feature that may affect renewal pricing when there have been no claims under the insurer’s rules. It is not a universal feature, and insurers can calculate or apply it differently. A claim does not necessarily produce the same effect across all policies.

Check the policy wording

Ask whether the discount is individual or shared across a family policy, which claims affect it, whether it builds over time and how it is applied at renewal. Find out whether the insurer can change the discount scale or premium independently; an NCD does not guarantee that the overall premium will fall.

Compare total renewal cost

Look at the premium, excess, cover limits and exclusions together. If you are switching insurer, ask whether any no-claims history is recognised; do not assume it transfers.

Is a no-claims discount the same as a protected discount?

Not necessarily. “Protected” and similar terms are policy-specific. Ask for the exact effect of a claim in writing.
