Will a Health Insurance Claim Affect Your Renewal Premium?
Published: 18 October 2026
Do not assume that one claim will automatically increase your private health insurance premium by a set amount. Renewal pricing and any no-claims adjustment depend on the insurer, policy, claims experience and other factors. The renewal documents should explain the price and any changes to cover.
Review the renewal offer
Compare the new premium with last year’s, but also check excess, benefit limits, hospital list, exclusions and any change to underwriting. Ask the insurer whether a claim affected the renewal terms and how any no-claims discount has been calculated.
Compare alternatives carefully
A lower quote may come with different exclusions, provider access or excess. If switching, tell the new insurer about your medical history and ask whether it can continue existing terms; do not assume that exclusions or time served under a moratorium transfer.
Should I avoid claiming to protect my premium?
Consider the likely covered cost, excess and policy terms, and ask the insurer how a claim is treated. Do not make a decision based on an assumed premium effect.
