Does Private Health Insurance Cover Sleep Apnoea?

Published: 30 October 2026

Do not assume a private medical insurance policy will cover sleep apnoea assessment or treatment. Policies may treat sleep-related disorders differently, and exclusions, medical history and the difference between diagnosis and ongoing management can all matter.

Ask about the exact service

Check whether the policy covers a sleep-clinic consultation, diagnostic testing, equipment, follow-up and treatment. Ask if the insurer requires a referral or pre-authorisation, and whether symptoms or investigations before the policy began affect eligibility.

Read the exclusions carefully. One insurer's policy guide may exclude sleep apnoea, but that does not establish the terms of another provider's product. Obtain a written decision for your own policy before arranging private tests.

Speak to your GP or sleep specialist about appropriate care. Insurance cover does not determine whether a test or treatment is clinically suitable.
