Private Health Insurance for Young Adults in the UK

Published: 18 October 2026

For a young adult, comparing private health insurance means deciding what cover is useful, not choosing a policy based on age alone. Premiums and eligibility depend on individual circumstances and the insurer’s terms; no single plan is best for everyone.

Compare the features that affect access and cost

Check inpatient and day-patient treatment, outpatient consultations and diagnostics, mental-health benefits, excess, hospital list and any limits. Read how the policy treats pre-existing conditions and ongoing care. A lower premium may reflect a higher excess, restricted hospital access or less outpatient cover.

If you are covered through family or work

Ask when dependent cover ends and whether you can continue or replace it. If cover comes from an employer, check what happens if you leave the job and whether personal cover would use different underwriting.

Is private insurance a substitute for NHS care?

No. Private cover is a separate route for eligible treatment and does not replace access to NHS services.
