Does Private Health Insurance Cover an MRI Scan in the UK?
Published: 18 October 2026
Some private medical insurance policies cover eligible diagnostic imaging, including MRI scans, when the scan is part of an authorised investigation. Cover is not automatic: the reason for the scan, referral route, provider, benefit limits and policy exclusions can all affect a claim.
Before booking a scan
Ask your clinician whether an MRI is clinically appropriate and obtain any referral the policy requires. Contact the insurer before making an appointment. Confirm the scan is authorised, the imaging centre is eligible, and whether the cost falls within an outpatient allowance or excess.
If you are paying yourself
Ask the imaging provider for a written quote and check whether it includes the radiologist’s report, contrast material if needed and any follow-up consultation. Ask how and when results will be sent to the referring clinician.
Can I book an MRI directly?
A provider may accept direct bookings, but your insurer may still require a referral and prior approval for a claim. Check first.
For limits on consultations and diagnostic tests, read our outpatient cover guide.
