Can You Have Private Treatment While on an NHS Waiting List?
Published: 19 October 2026
NHS and private care can sometimes be used alongside each other, but the services must remain separate. If you are considering private treatment while waiting for NHS care, speak to your NHS team before changing plans.
Keep the two pathways clear
Official guidance says private care should be provided separately from NHS care, and the NHS cannot pay for or subsidise private treatment. The details can depend on your clinical situation and the part of the UK where you receive care.
Ask your NHS clinician what private treatment would mean for your NHS appointments, investigations and place on a waiting list. Do not assume you can transfer results or treatment between pathways without discussion. Keep copies of records and make sure each clinician knows what care you have received.
If you plan to use insurance
Your insurer must separately approve eligible private treatment. Confirm any referral, hospital, consultant, excess and benefit-limit requirements before booking. A decision to go private should not delay urgent NHS care.
