NHS Mental Health Waiting Times Are at Breaking Point — What Private Cover Offers
One in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem in any given year. But accessing NHS mental health support has become increasingly difficult — with waiting times for talking therapies stretching to 18 months or more in some parts of the country.
It's one of the clearest cases for private health insurance cover, and yet mental health is the feature most people forget to check when comparing policies.
The Scale of the Problem
NHS Talking Therapies services are under enormous strain. Many areas are seeing waits far beyond the 18-week target for anything beyond basic CBT. Specialist services — eating disorders, complex PTSD, personality disorder services — have waits that can extend to years.
The result: people either go without support, pay out of pocket for private therapy (£60-150 per session), or wait so long their condition worsens significantly.
What Private Health Insurance Mental Health Cover Includes
Talking therapies (outpatient) — sessions with a psychologist, psychotherapist or counsellor. Good policies offer 8-20 sessions per year; the best offer unlimited sessions up to a financial limit.
Psychiatric consultations — access to a consultant psychiatrist for assessment, diagnosis and medication review. Waiting times privately: usually 1-2 weeks vs 3-6 months on the NHS.
Inpatient psychiatric care — if you need admission to a psychiatric facility for acute mental health crises, severe depression or eating disorders. Private psychiatric hospitals are significantly better resourced than NHS equivalents.
Day-patient mental health — structured day programmes for conditions that need more than weekly therapy but not full inpatient admission. Highly effective for eating disorders, anxiety and mood disorders.
Which Insurers Have the Best Mental Health Cover?
Bupa — one of the strongest in the market. Their Bluebell mental health pathway gives fast access to a mental health nurse who can triage and direct you to the right support. Inpatient and day-patient cover included.
AXA Health — includes mental health in core policies with good outpatient session limits and strong digital mental health tools.
Vitality — good outpatient cover plus preventive mental health tools and mindfulness programmes as part of the rewards programme.
The Exeter — good mental health cover with competitive premiums, particularly for older applicants.
Aviva — includes mental health cover with their DigiCare+ benefit, including digital GP consultations for mental health.
What to Check When Comparing Policies
- How many outpatient therapy sessions are included?
- Is inpatient psychiatric care covered?
- Is there a separate sublimit for mental health vs. physical health?
- Is there a psychiatric nurse helpline included?
How Much Does Mental Health Cover Add?
- Basic mental health add-on (outpatient therapy only): typically £10-30/month extra
- Full mental health cover (outpatient + inpatient): typically £20-50/month extra
- Some insurers include it in all policies at no extra cost
Given that a single private psychiatry consultation costs £200-400 and a course of CBT costs £800-2,000, even one use of the benefit pays for several years of the add-on premium.
