Can You Add a Partner or Child to Health Insurance?
Published: 19 October 2026
Many insurers allow a partner or child to be added to a family policy, but eligibility is not identical across providers. Age limits, address rules, student status, underwriting and the point when changes can be made all depend on the policy.
Questions to ask the insurer
Confirm whether the person can join mid-term or only at renewal, what information they need to provide, and whether medical underwriting or exclusions will apply. Ask how a new member affects the premium, excess, benefit limits and any family discount.
Do not assume a child remains eligible after a particular birthday or that a partner must have the same address. Request the specific criteria in writing, especially if adding a newborn, adopted child or adult dependant.
If each person has different cover needs, compare a family policy with separate individual policies. A joint arrangement is not automatically cheaper or more suitable.
