How to Find a Consultant Recognised by Your Insurer

Published: 30 October 2026

Before booking a private appointment, check that the consultant is recognised by your insurer for the treatment you need. Recognition does not by itself confirm that your condition or treatment is covered.

Use the insurer's current directory

Ask the insurer to confirm the consultant, hospital and proposed treatment are eligible under your policy. Some insurers have fee-assured specialists whose eligible fees they pay in full; other recognised consultants may be paid only up to a schedule or benefit limit. If the consultant charges more, you could have a shortfall.

Confirm whether a referral is needed, whether the consultant can treat your particular condition, and whether the authorisation applies to tests, surgery and follow-up. Get the claim reference and any limits in writing.

You can also use PHIN to review information about consultants and hospitals, then confirm insurance recognition directly with your provider.
