How to Read a Private Health Insurance IPID
Published: 4 November 2026
An Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) is a short summary designed to help you understand a product’s main features and exclusions. It is useful when comparing policies, but it does not replace the insurer’s full policy wording or your personal membership certificate.
Start with the cover summary
Check what type of treatment the product is designed to cover, the main benefits and important exclusions. Note any limits, excesses and conditions that could affect a claim. An IPID is a starting point: it will not necessarily describe every option available or the exact terms selected for your policy.
Read the documents together
Use the IPID to identify questions, then check the policy guide for detailed definitions and rules. Your certificate or schedule should show the cover and limits actually selected for you, while a special-conditions letter may list individual exclusions.
Before buying, check:
- whether the policy covers inpatient, day-patient, outpatient and diagnostic care
- the insurer’s rules for referrals and pre-authorisation
- how excesses, co-payments and benefit limits work
- exclusions for pre-existing conditions, chronic care or other services
- the hospital and consultant access included in the plan
If the summary and full policy seem different, ask the insurer or adviser to explain the wording in writing. Do not rely on a general brochure to confirm a specific claim.
