Does Private Health Insurance Cover ADHD or Autism Assessments?

Published: 19 October 2026

There is no single answer for every UK private health insurance policy. Cover for an ADHD or autism assessment, related consultations and treatment depends on the policy, the reason for the referral, medical history and any specific exclusions.

Ask about the exact service

Before booking, ask the insurer whether it covers the assessment itself, which specialist or clinic you may use, whether a GP referral is required, and whether any outpatient limit applies. If symptoms or investigations existed before the policy began, underwriting may affect eligibility even if there was no formal diagnosis.

Also check whether a policy distinguishes between diagnosis, treatment and ongoing support. A benefit for mental health consultations does not necessarily include neurodevelopmental assessment or long-term services.

Get a written answer

Provide accurate information when applying and do not assume a new diagnosis automatically makes the costs eligible. Ask for a claim decision or written benefit confirmation before committing to a private appointment.
