Private Health Insurance After Retirement: What to Check
Published: 30 October 2026
Retirement can change how you arrange health insurance, especially if your current policy is provided through work. Do not assume workplace cover continues after your employment ends or that an individual replacement policy will offer the same terms.
Confirm the end date and continuation options
Ask your employer or scheme administrator when cover ends, how ongoing claims are handled, and whether a personal continuation option is available. If you need a new policy, compare the underwriting basis, exclusions, hospital access, excess and outpatient limits. Existing medical history may affect new cover.
Budget for future renewals
Premiums and eligibility depend on insurer and policy factors, and future renewal prices are not guaranteed. Compare the full annual cost with the benefits you would use, not just the first quote. Check whether dependants are covered and how their terms change when they leave the scheme.

Options vary by employer, insurer and personal circumstances. Confirm dates and terms before leaving a scheme.
