Should You Pay for Health Insurance Monthly or Annually?
Published: 30 October 2026
Some UK health insurers let customers pay premiums monthly or annually. The available methods and any difference in total cost depend on the insurer and product, so compare the actual quote rather than assuming one method is cheaper.
Compare the total amount due
Ask whether monthly payments are instalments of the same annual premium or include a financing charge. Check any deposit, fees, payment dates and what happens if a payment is missed. For annual payment, confirm when the full amount is collected and whether the policy renews automatically.
Consider cash flow as well as the total cost. Monthly payments spread the amount across the year; annual payment requires more money up front. Neither method changes the policy's exclusions, excess or benefits.
Review at renewal
Ask how the insurer will notify you of renewal terms and how to cancel or change payment method. Compare the new premium and cover before renewal rather than assuming last year's terms continue unchanged.
