Does Private Health Insurance Cover an Endoscopy?
Published: 30 October 2026
An endoscopy may be used to investigate symptoms or as part of eligible treatment. Whether private medical insurance covers it depends on the policy's diagnostic benefits, referral rules, medical history and insurer approval.
Confirm the full pathway
Ask whether your policy includes private diagnosis or expects an NHS diagnosis first. Check whether the procedure needs pre-authorisation, which hospital and specialist are recognised, and how your outpatient limit, excess and consultant-fee allowance apply.
If your plan has a six-week NHS option, ask whether the endoscopy qualifies and how the NHS waiting period is measured. Do not assume the option applies to every test or that a referral alone authorises the procedure.
Ask the provider whether the estimate includes the consultant, facility, sedation, pathology and follow-up. These items may be billed separately.
