Does Private Health Insurance Cover Fertility Treatment?
Published: 19 October 2026
Do not assume private health insurance will pay for fertility investigations or treatment. Many policies exclude fertility services, including assisted reproduction, but the exact wording and any exceptions depend on the insurer and product.
Check the exclusion wording
Look for terms covering fertility investigations, IVF or other assisted reproduction, medication, donor eggs or sperm, and related consultations. Also check whether the policy excludes treatment connected with an excluded condition. A general outpatient benefit does not automatically override a specific exclusion.
If you are already insured, ask the insurer to confirm in writing whether the proposed appointment or treatment is eligible before you book. Ask the clinic for a self-pay estimate and what it includes if insurance will not cover it.
NHS pathways are separate
NHS fertility-service eligibility and access are determined separately and may vary across the UK and by local commissioning arrangements. Ask your GP or local NHS service about current criteria rather than relying on an insurance policy to answer that question.
