What Is an NHS Cash Benefit on Health Insurance?
Published: 30 October 2026
Some private medical insurance policies include a cash benefit if you receive eligible treatment through the NHS instead of claiming for private treatment. It is a feature of certain policies, not a standard payment that every insured person receives.
Check the benefit conditions
The policy may limit payment to particular types of NHS care, such as an eligible inpatient stay, and set a nightly amount, maximum number of nights or annual cap. It may exclude same-day admissions or prevent two cash benefits being paid for treatment on the same date.
Ask whether the proposed NHS care qualifies, what evidence is required and how to claim. The benefit is not a reimbursement of NHS charges, nor does it mean the insurer pays for the NHS treatment.
Compare the whole policy
Do not choose a plan on the cash benefit alone. Compare the core treatment cover, hospital list, excess, exclusions and cash-benefit limits. Read the current policy guide because insurers and product versions differ.
