Does UK Private Health Insurance Cover Treatment Abroad?

Published: 18 October 2026

Do not assume a UK private medical insurance policy covers planned treatment abroad. Territorial limits vary: some policies restrict eligible treatment to the UK, while separate international health plans may be designed for people living or working across countries.

Check the policy before travelling

Read the sections on where treatment is covered, emergency treatment abroad, evacuation and repatriation. These benefits are not interchangeable. Ask the insurer whether the policy covers the country, treatment and provider, and whether prior authorisation is required.

Health insurance is not automatically travel insurance

Travel insurance may address emergency medical expenses and travel-related risks, while PMI is structured around eligible medical treatment. Neither should be assumed to cover the other’s purpose. If you travel, check both sets of wording and disclose relevant circumstances.

What if I live outside the UK?

Ask whether you need international private medical insurance and how residency affects eligibility. A UK domestic policy may not suit someone who lives abroad.
