Does Private Health Insurance Cover Physiotherapy?
Published: 18 October 2026
Some private medical insurance policies include physiotherapy or offer it as an optional benefit. Cover may depend on the cause of the problem, whether it is a new eligible condition, how you access treatment and whether the insurer approves the claim.
Check before booking
Ask whether you need a GP or insurer referral, whether the physiotherapist must be recognised, and how many sessions or what allowance your policy provides. Confirm whether the excess applies and whether further sessions need approval. Keep the claim reference and any treatment plan.
When cover may not apply
An exclusion, pre-existing condition, chronic-care restriction or exhausted benefit limit may affect eligibility. Do not assume that a clinician’s recommendation means the insurer will pay.
Can I choose my own physiotherapist?
Only if your policy allows it. Some insurers require you to use a provider in their network or obtain approval first.
