Does Private Health Insurance Cover Rehabilitation After Surgery?

Published: 30 October 2026

Rehabilitation after surgery may be covered when it is part of eligible treatment, but policies can limit the type, provider, duration or number of sessions. Do not assume that approval for an operation automatically approves every rehabilitation appointment.

Agree the plan with your insurer

Ask whether your policy includes post-operative physiotherapy or other rehabilitation, whether your consultant must recommend it, and if each session or treatment plan needs separate authorisation. Check the provider network, excess, outpatient allowance and any session cap.

If you are self-funding the operation, ask the hospital for an estimate of aftercare and what is included in the procedure package. If you use the NHS for surgery and private rehabilitation afterwards, confirm the arrangements with both care teams and your insurer.
