Does Private Health Insurance Cover Pregnancy or Maternity Care?

Published: 18 October 2026

Do not assume private medical insurance includes routine pregnancy or maternity care. Many policies exclude routine antenatal care, childbirth and fertility treatment, although policy wording and any specific benefits differ. Some policies may treat complications differently from routine pregnancy care.

Read the wording before relying on cover

Check the sections on pregnancy, maternity, complications, hospital admission and newborns. Ask the insurer how it defines a complication and whether it needs to arise after the policy starts. Confirm referral, provider and authorisation rules before arranging private care.

NHS care remains an option

Private insurance is separate from NHS maternity services. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, speak with your midwife or GP about NHS care and ask the insurer what, if anything, your policy adds.

Will a policy cover a newborn?

This varies. Ask whether a baby can be added, when cover can begin, whether medical underwriting applies and whether any waiting period or newborn benefit is included.
