Can You Get a Second Medical Opinion Through Private Health Insurance?

Published: 18 October 2026

A second opinion is another clinician’s view of a diagnosis or proposed treatment. Whether private health insurance will pay for it depends on the policy, the reason for the appointment and the insurer’s approval process.

Before arranging an appointment

Ask your insurer whether a second consultation is covered under your current claim or needs separate authorisation. Confirm whether you need a referral, whether the consultant must be on an approved list and what the policy will pay. Ask the clinician who made the original diagnosis to share relevant records where appropriate.

Questions to ask the insurer

Check whether a second opinion is covered for your situation, whether scans or tests are included, and whether an excess or outpatient limit applies. Get approval before booking and keep the response.

Can I use a second opinion to change treatment?

A second opinion can inform a discussion, but it does not automatically amend an insurer’s authorisation or guarantee cover for a different treatment plan. Contact the insurer before proceeding.
