What Is the Six-Week NHS Option in Health Insurance?

Published: 30 October 2026

A six-week NHS option is a feature offered by some UK health insurance products. In a common version, you use eligible NHS inpatient or day-patient treatment when the NHS can provide it within the agreed six-week window; private cover may apply if it cannot. The precise scope and trigger are product-specific.

Check the wording, not just the name

Ask which treatments qualify, when the waiting-time clock starts, what evidence the insurer needs from the NHS, and whether the option applies to outpatient tests. Do not assume every policy includes it or that it works the same way across providers.

It may reduce the premium, but the trade-off can include less choice over where and when eligible treatment takes place. Ask how the option interacts with hospital lists, consultant choice and the policy excess.

Compare it with full private hospital access using the same cover assumptions and get the insurer's explanation in writing.
