Does Private Health Insurance Cover Skin Conditions?
Published: 30 October 2026
Private health insurance may cover eligible dermatology consultations or treatment for a new medical condition, but it does not cover every skin problem. Chronic conditions, pre-existing symptoms, cosmetic procedures and routine checks may be excluded or limited.
Check the exact reason for treatment
Ask whether your policy covers the consultation, tests, biopsy or proposed treatment. Confirm the referral route, recognised dermatologist, outpatient limit, excess and pre-authorisation requirements. Explain any previous symptoms or treatment accurately so the insurer can assess underwriting.
Treatment intended mainly to change appearance may fall under a cosmetic exclusion, even if a dermatologist provides it. A medically necessary procedure may be assessed differently, but do not assume it is covered without written approval.
For urgent or changing symptoms, seek clinical advice rather than relying on a policy comparison. Insurance cover does not determine whether a condition needs prompt attention.
