Does Private Health Insurance Cover Vaccinations?
Published: 4 November 2026
Do not assume a private medical insurance policy pays for vaccinations, travel jabs or tests to check immunity. These may be treated as preventive care rather than eligible treatment for an acute medical condition, and exclusions vary by policy.
Check the wording for the service you need
Bupa’s By You policy guide, for example, lists immunisations, tests to confirm immunity and vaccinations among services that may be excluded. That is an example of one product’s wording, not a rule for every insurer. Some policies may offer separate wellbeing or vaccination benefits, while others may provide no benefit.
Travel vaccinations are also different from treatment for an illness that occurs while travelling. A health insurance policy may not be a substitute for travel insurance, and a UK GHIC does not cover private treatment or planned care abroad.
Questions to ask before booking
Ask the insurer whether the exact vaccine or immunity test is included, where it can be obtained, whether you need pre-authorisation, and whether a limit or excess applies. If the policy does not cover it, ask the provider for the self-pay price before you book.
For a wider explanation of care that policies may exclude, read our health insurance exclusions checklist. For overseas trips, see GHIC, travel insurance and private health cover.
