Does Private Health Insurance Cover Varicose Vein Treatment?
Published: 30 October 2026
Cover for varicose vein treatment depends on the insurer's definition of eligible medical treatment and the reason for the procedure. Treatment for symptoms or a medical problem may be assessed differently from treatment sought only to change appearance.
What to ask your insurer
Describe the symptoms and proposed treatment accurately. Ask whether the policy covers assessment, ultrasound or other tests, the procedure and follow-up. Check any cosmetic-treatment exclusion, pre-existing-condition clause, referral requirement and authorisation process.
Do not rely on a clinic saying it accepts insurance as proof that your own policy will pay. Confirm that both the provider and treatment are recognised, and ask whether the insurer has a specific medical-necessity threshold.
If paying privately, request a written estimate and ask which costs are included. Discuss symptoms and treatment options with an appropriate clinician.
