Does Private Health Insurance Cover Weight-Loss Surgery?

Published: 30 October 2026

Weight-loss surgery is commonly excluded from standard private medical insurance, but policies and exceptions differ. Do not assume an inpatient or surgery benefit includes bariatric treatment.

Read the specific exclusion

Check the policy wording for weight-loss treatment, obesity, bariatric surgery and related complications. Ask whether the insurer distinguishes treatment of an acute medical condition from surgery intended primarily for weight management, and whether any exception could apply to your circumstances.

If you are considering surgery, speak with an appropriately qualified clinician about suitability, risks, alternatives and follow-up needs. If you want to self-fund, request a full written estimate covering assessment, tests, surgery, hospital stay, aftercare and any ongoing support.

Do not book on the assumption that a general health insurance policy will reimburse the cost. Ask the insurer for written confirmation before committing.

See our exclusions checklist for a structured way to review policy wording.
