Can You Have Two Private Health Insurance Policies?

Published: 19 October 2026

You may have more than one health policy, for example an individual plan alongside workplace benefits. But having two policies does not mean you can be reimbursed twice for the same treatment cost.

Tell both insurers

Check each policy's section on other insurance and claims. Tell the insurers about overlapping cover and ask which one should receive the claim first, what documents they need and whether one insurer can consider costs left unpaid by the other. Keep copies of approvals, invoices and settlement statements.

Benefits that pay a fixed cash amount may work differently from policies that reimburse eligible treatment bills. Do not assume that a cash benefit or contribution clause applies; check the exact contract.

Compare the value of keeping both

List the benefits, exclusions, excesses, hospital access and premiums for each policy. Workplace cover may end when employment ends, so check its dates and any continuation option. If you intend to cancel one policy, confirm the end date and any open claims first.
