Bupa vs WPA Health Insurance: Brand vs Service (2026)
Last updated: September 2026
Bupa and WPA take different approaches to UK private medical insurance. WPA has consistently ranked above Bupa for customer satisfaction, despite being much smaller. Bupa offers access to a wider hospital network. The right choice depends on which of these factors matters more to you.
What Bupa is
Bupa is the UK's largest and best-known private medical insurance (PMI) provider. It owns and runs its own hospital network, including Bupa Cromwell Hospital, alongside independent private facilities. Its By You comprehensive policy includes cancer and mental health cover as standard, without requiring you to select a range of add-ons. Bupa's digital health services, including the Blua Health app for GP access, specialist referrals and prescriptions, are among the most developed in the market.
What WPA is
WPA (Western Provident Association) has operated as a not-for-profit provident association since 1901. It has no shareholders, health insurance is its sole product, and it reinvests any surplus in member services rather than distributing it. Since 2021, WPA has held the highest Trustpilot rating of any UK health insurer. A notably high proportion of its reviews come from people who have made a claim, rather than only from those who bought a policy.
Customer satisfaction — WPA's clearest advantage
Independent research consistently places WPA at the top of UK PMI customer satisfaction. An important distinction is when customers rate their experience: WPA's score is strongly influenced by reviews from people who have made a claim, when an insurer's service is put to the test. Bupa also scores well for customer service, but WPA's particular strength is its claims experience: how quickly claims are authorised, how clearly decisions are communicated and how fairly borderline cases are assessed.
If your main concern is “what happens when I need to make a claim?”, WPA has the strongest track record in the market.
Hospital network — Bupa's clearest advantage
Bupa's hospital list is broader, reflecting its scale and the inclusion of its own directly operated facilities. This matters most if local private hospital options are limited or if you specifically want access to Bupa's own hospitals, including Cromwell in London. WPA's network is smaller, so check whether it includes your preferred hospital.
Cover structure
Bupa's approach is inclusive by default: comprehensive cover comes as a relatively complete package that needs little configuration. WPA's approach is more detailed: its core policy has a separate, configurable allowance for each benefit rather than one combined outpatient limit. This gives WPA policyholders more control over what they pay for, but requires more decisions when they take out a policy.
Price
WPA's not-for-profit structure has historically allowed it to price competitively against large, well-known insurers. Bupa's prices are at the higher end of the market, reflecting its wider hospital access and larger infrastructure. For like-for-like cover, WPA tends to be meaningfully cheaper, although its smaller hospital network is a trade-off to consider.
No-claims discount
Both insurers offer a no-claims discount (NCD), but WPA's structure is considered one of the more protective in the market. It is designed to limit how much a single claim affects your future premium. Bupa tracks NCD separately for each family member, so one person's claim does not affect everyone else's discount.
