Does Private Health Insurance Cover Diagnostic Tests?
Published: 19 October 2026
Some UK private medical insurance policies cover diagnostic tests and scans when they are medically necessary and approved. Others restrict private diagnosis, set outpatient limits or exclude screening. The policy schedule and benefit wording decide what applies.
Diagnosis cover is not universal
A comprehensive policy may include eligible consultant appointments, tests and scans. A treatment-focused plan may expect you to receive a diagnosis through the NHS or pay for diagnosis yourself, then use insurance for eligible treatment. This distinction can substantially change what a policy does for you.
Ask before arranging a test
Check whether you need a GP or specialist referral, whether the test must be authorised, what provider you may use, and how outpatient limits or excess apply. Ask whether repeat tests, monitoring or tests without symptoms are covered; routine screening is often treated differently from diagnostic investigation of a medical problem.

Cover depends on the policy, clinical need and insurer authorisation. Confirm before booking a test.
