Does Private Health Insurance Cover Sports Injuries?

Published: 19 October 2026

A sports injury may be eligible for private medical insurance if it is a new, acute condition and the policy covers the proposed treatment. That is not automatic: activity exclusions, medical history, treatment limits and insurer approval all matter.

Check the activity and treatment

Read the policy for restrictions on professional or semi-professional sport, hazardous activities, injuries caused deliberately and treatment that is not considered medically necessary. Do not assume a policy covering ordinary illness will cover every sporting activity.

Ask the insurer whether it needs a GP referral, which physiotherapist or consultant you can see, and whether scans or follow-up sessions need separate authorisation. Check the excess and any physiotherapy or outpatient limit before booking.

If the injury is an emergency, use NHS emergency services rather than waiting for insurance approval. For non-urgent care, keep the referral and claim reference and follow the insurer's process.

Our physiotherapy cover guide covers session limits and referral rules.
