Does Private Health Insurance Cover Allergy Tests?

Published: 4 November 2026

Private health insurance does not automatically cover every allergy test. Cover depends on the policy wording, the reason for the test, your medical history and whether the insurer authorises the investigation.

Allergy exclusions can be product-specific

Some policies exclude allergies, allergic disorders or food intolerance, while a policy may make exceptions for particular tests or circumstances. Bupa’s current policy guide sets out its own exclusions and benefit terms; the rules in one insurer’s policy should not be treated as industry-wide rules.

An allergy test may be part of an investigation into a new symptom, but that does not by itself make it eligible. The insurer may consider whether the symptoms existed before cover began, whether the test is medically necessary, and whether the referral and provider meet the policy requirements.

Before arranging a test

Ask the insurer to confirm in writing:

  • whether the suspected condition is covered under your underwriting terms
  • whether the specific test and clinic are eligible
  • whether you need a GP or specialist referral
  • whether outpatient limits, excess or co-payment apply
  • whether any follow-up consultation is included

Do not book privately on the assumption that a referral guarantees payment. Contact the insurer first. For general diagnostics, see our guide to diagnostic tests and private health insurance.
