Does Private Health Insurance Cover Back Pain?

Published: 30 October 2026

Private health insurance may cover eligible investigation or treatment for a new back problem, but it does not automatically cover every episode of pain. Previous symptoms, GP visits, scans or treatment may affect underwriting and eligibility.

Check medical history and policy terms

Tell the insurer about relevant symptoms and treatment when applying or making a claim. Ask whether the condition is considered pre-existing, whether your policy covers diagnostic tests and specialist consultations, and whether physiotherapy or surgery needs separate approval.

Confirm the required referral route, recognised consultant, outpatient limit, excess and any consultant-fee shortfall risk. Ask for the decision in writing before booking.

Back pain can have different causes and may need urgent assessment. Contact NHS 111 or emergency services if you are worried about severe or rapidly changing symptoms; do not wait for an insurance claim decision.

See our MRI cover guide for questions about imaging approval.
