Private Health Insurance: Diagnosis Cover vs Treatment Cover
Published: 19 October 2026
Some policies can cover eligible private diagnosis as well as treatment. Other plans focus on treatment after a diagnosis made by the NHS or through a privately funded consultation. The distinction affects how you can use your cover.
What diagnosis cover may include
Depending on the policy, private diagnosis benefits may include eligible consultant appointments, scans or tests used to investigate a health concern. Referral rules, outpatient limits and pre-authorisation still apply.
How treatment-only cover can work
A treatment-only policy may expect you to obtain a diagnosis through an NHS service or pay for a private diagnosis yourself. If treatment is then recommended, the policy may cover it only if the condition and treatment meet its terms and the insurer approves the claim.
Insurers use different product names and definitions. Check whether tests after treatment, follow-up consultations and rehabilitation are included. Do not assume that “hospital cover” includes private diagnostic appointments.
