Private Health Insurance for Children: What to Check

Published: 4 November 2026

Children may be insured as dependants on some family health insurance policies, but eligibility, available services and the age at which a child must move to another policy depend on the insurer and plan. Do not assume that a family policy covers every child benefit in the same way.

Read the family policy documents

Check the membership certificate for each person insured and the policy guide for the full terms. Look for:

  • the definition of a child or dependant and any age or study conditions
  • whether the child is covered for outpatient consultations and diagnostic tests
  • any hospital-network or consultant-choice restrictions
  • how the excess applies to each family member
  • whether benefits, such as GP or mental health services, have age-specific rules

Bupa’s policy guide, for example, explains that the membership certificate shows the cover selected for the household and that special conditions may apply to dependants. This is a useful reminder to check the actual certificate rather than relying on a general product brochure.

Adding a child or changing cover

Tell the insurer about a new child or a change in circumstances and ask when cover begins, what medical-history underwriting applies and whether any waiting periods or exclusions are relevant. Get the insurer’s confirmation in writing before arranging private care.

Compare the family premium and benefits with the cost of adding a dependant to an existing policy. Our guide explains how to add a family member to a health insurance policy, and our family health insurance guide covers wider household comparisons.
